Frontline health workers—including Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs)—play a critical role in India’s public health system, connecting communities with essential health services and translating national health priorities such as the National Health Policy (NHP) 2017 into household- and community-level outcomes.
Their role requires them to provide information, counsel families, facilitate access to health services, and support basic care at the community level. This requires access to trusted, government-approved guidance at short notice, so they can respond accurately to health-related questions and support informed decisions in the field.
The HealthVaani application is a voice-and-text-based knowledge assistant designed to empower ASHA workers with instant, accurate, government-validated information. It leverages generative AI to deliver real-time, guideline-based responses grounded in Government of India–verified documents.
Piloted in January 2026 with ASHA workers across Odisha and Maharashtra. Currently available in Hindi, English, and Odia, with plans to expand to other Indic languages.
Empowering ASHA workers with real-time, verified knowledge is key to improving community-level health and nutrition outcomes. Scaling Health Vaani through partnerships with central and state governments, training institutions, and digital health missions can help unlock a more equitable, efficient, and resilient frontline workforce.
