Spoken English plays an important role in academic participation, workplace communication, and employability, particularly as learners transition from education to the world of work. In India, research has found a positive relationship between English language skills and employment and wage outcomes, including evidence that improving English skills can strengthen employability.
Yet opportunities for regular speaking practice and individual feedback can be limited, particularly in large classroom settings. Traditional English learning often places greater emphasis on written exercises and objective assessments, while learners may have fewer opportunities to practise speaking, pronunciation, listening, and real-world workplace communication. This can make it difficult for learners to build confidence and apply English in situations such as workplace interactions, networking, and interviews.
Wadhwani AI's Spoken English Assessment & Practice (SEAP) is an AI-powered, self-paced platform that combines structured learning in grammar, vocabulary, listening, pronunciation, and speaking with AI-enabled feedback and assessment, helping learners build communication and employability skills progressively.
Its 25-lesson journey moves from foundational communication to workplace interactions, problem-solving, customer communication, networking, and interview readiness. Designed for scalable deployment across UG/PG colleges, ITIs, and polytechnics, SEAP lets learners practise independently while giving institutions programme-level insights into participation, progress, and course completion.
The solution is deployed on SWAYAM and is now expanding to include most English and communication courses on the platform.
SEAP demonstrates how responsible AI can help India build a more confident, communication-ready workforce and learner community. By scaling SEAP across platforms and institutions, India can support millions of learners in expressing themselves clearly and confidently, and, in turn, opening doors to higher education, better employment, and everyday life. SEAP is now expanding to include most English and communication courses on SWAYAM. Going forward, it will support learners and young adults in ITIs, polytechnics, and colleges in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
